What You Should Know About Swollen Feet

What you should know about swollen feet
Due to the effect of gravity on the body fluids, swelling in the feet or ankles is a very common problem. This health condition is known as the peripheral edema and it does not cause pain. But if the swelling is because of an injury to your ankle or feet then that could be painful; however, it depends on the severity of the injury.

What You Should Know About Swollen Feet
Swelling of the feet is a very common problem for seniors. This can affect both the legs or just one leg. There are a number of leg and ankle swelling remedies that can be done at home and you may not need a doctor unless it is very painful.

Below is some information about the causes of swollen feet, treatment options, and more.

What are the common causes of swelling in the feet?

  • One of the main causes of leg or feet swelling is obesity. When an individual is overweight, the blood circulation in the body reduces, leading to accumulation of fluids in the lower part of the body. This will result in swelling of the feet.
  • When you stand or sit for a very long time, your body muscles remain inactive for that period and that could cause swelling in the feet.
  • Pregnancy is another common cause for swelling of the feet.
  • A blood clot in the legs can lead to swelling of the legs and feet.
  • Kidney failure causes swelling in the feet.
  • Natural changes in the progesterone and estrogen hormone levels can reduce blood circulation, causing swollen feet.
  • Birth control pills or antidepressants can lead to swollen feet.
  • Liver failure can be a cause of swollen feet and ankle.
  • Any infections to the leg or feet can cause swollen legs or ankles.

When should you contact a doctor?
Although swollen feet is a common phenomenon, there are certain times when you need to contact your doctor, this includes:

  • Alongside swollen feet, if you observe any other health problems, such as chest pain, dizziness, mental confusion, or trouble in breathing.
  • If you notice an abnormality in your feet or ankle along with the swelling.
  • If you are pregnant and along with the swelling of the feet you experience dizziness or nausea.
  • Along with swelling in the feet, you have a fever.

What are some self-care tips for treating swollen feet?

  • You should try to keep your legs in an elevated position when you are lying down. Try to bring your legs above your heart. You can make use of pillows or soft cushions for support.
  • You should not keep your legs inactive for a long time. If you sit and work for a long time or stand and work for a long time, then try to walk and move at least once in two hours.
  • Build up of fluids in your feet can be reduced by limiting salt intake.
  • Do not wear tight clothes below your thighs.
  • You need to maintain a healthy weight.

What are the treatment options for swollen feet during pregnancy?
Swollen feet and ankles are a common symptom that appears in late pregnancy. Usually, this swelling is caused because of fluid retention and increased pressure on the veins. Mostly, swollen feet can be treated with the help of home remedies. However, if the swollen feet are accompanied by other symptoms like dizziness and/or nausea, it is best to consult a doctor right away. Some helpful home remedies for treating swollen feet and ankles during pregnancy are:

  • Elevate feet whenever and wherever possible.
  • Wear supportive and comfortable footwear.
  • Avoid standing continuously for long periods of time.
