Tips to keep an eye on your eyes

Eyes are the window to the soul, but they’re also a window to the world around us. So, undoubtedly, it is essential to keep them fit and fine. There’s a lot you can do to keep your eyes healthy, from getting regular checkups to getting the right amount of nutrition.

Tips to keep an eye on your eyes

Here are some tips that will help you keep your eyes healthy:

Get those eyes checked

We’re not talking about just a usual eye checkup because even if your eyes feel healthy, there could be a problem you may not know. Get a comprehensive dilated eye exam that will help diagnose any eye condition in its early stages. Treating any condition is more manageable in its initial stages.

Health is wealth

Taking care of your health has long-term and all-round benefits. So, stay healthy by opting for some physical activity. Being physically fit will reduce the risk of other diseases and disorders that can ruin your eye health. Eye exercises can also be practiced to reduce the chances of eye conditions.

Save them from the sun

The sun emits UV rays that are harmful to your skin and, yes, eyes. In fact, they cause macular degeneration and even fast-track cataracts. So, get a pair of sunglasses that block out both UVA and UVB rays of the sun.

Give them some rest (both during the night and day)

Eyes continuously work throughout the day and deserve some much-needed rest. If the majority of the day is spent staring at a computer screen or your phone, ensure that the eyes get breaks every 20 minutes. During the break period, look off at something far away for at least 20 seconds. Also, get a good night’s rest; it will help your eyes rest and feel fresh in the morning.

Clean those contacts

If you use contacts, you need to clean them every time you use them. Always wash your hands before putting the contacts in. Moreover, disinfect them each time you put them in and take them out and place them in a clean container. If these instructions are not followed to the T, your eyes are at a high risk of contracting eye infections.

Quit smoking

Smoking is injurious to health. It destroys your lungs and exposes you to hordes of other diseases, such as cancer. Not many know this, but it also affects your eyes. It increases the risk of macular degeneration and can damage the optic nerve severely.

Know if pre-existing conditions can affect your eyes

A lot of other illnesses and diseases contribute to poor eye health. Diabetes, obesity, and increased blood pressure are a few that put your eye health and vision at risk. Speak to a doctor to understand the various risks that pre-existing conditions have on your eyes and treat these problems as soon as possible.

Eat healthily

Your diet needs leafy greens. Add healthy foods like spinach and kale to up your green intake. Also, try foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, as they help maintain excellent eye health.
