A common practice seen is to get this procedure done just after pregnancy.

There is no doubt that tubal ligation is one of the best female sterilization option available today that permanently gets rid of your fear of unwanted pregnancy. But here are some things you need to know about before you get your tubes tied:

  •     Procedure of tubal ligation
Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon makes a small cut in your stomach and then clamps and seals off both the fallopian tubes. Every month a woman’s body sees ovulation when the egg leaves the ovaries and passes through the fallopian tubes for at least few days. During this time, if you have a sexual intercourse and a sperm meets this egg, then the egg might get fertilized. So, by going ahead with tubal ligation, you can now be sure that your ovary eggs would never meet any sperms, in short, you cannot get pregnant after this surgery.
  •    Reversing of this sterilization
Tubal ligation at most times reversed, so you need to be sure when you decide to go for this surgery. Though you can try getting pregnant through IVF, there is no guarantee that you can get pregnant for sure. There are some cases where you can reverse the procedure, but it is complicated and will cost you a fortune. Whether you can reverse the sterilization or no depends on what procedure was used while sealing off the tubes.
  •     Risks
It is rare that serious problems are faced by women who went for tubal ligation. But if you suffer from a rash, swelling, unusual vaginal discharge or sense a severe pain in your belly, it is best to see a gynecologist and get yourself checked. In some very rare cases, women get pregnant after getting their tubes tied, it is called ectopic pregnancy, and it is dangerous.
  •     Is it for you
It is observed that a lot of women, especially those who got a tubal ligation in their 20’s, later in their 30’s have a post-surgery regret which they can’t do much about. What you want right now, might not be what your future self would want. Keep in mind that a new partner, marriage, divorce or any major life change can change your opinion about getting pregnant.

This sterilization option might not be a solution if you are being pressurized by your partner or family or think that it will temporarily solve any marriage or sex life issue. Also, remember that this surgical procedure won’t protect you from contracting STD, so if that is the reason why you are getting it done then think again.

The best way to know that you are not ready for tubal ligation is when before the surgery even takes place you are already searching for the chances of reversing the sterilization. It is best to give a serious thought about the topic before you take a final decision.
