Here’s What You Need to Know about ADHD

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a type of a behavioral disorder that not only affects children but also adults. The most common symptoms of this condition include being inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive. Medication and counseling are two of the most successful treatment options in this scenario. If proper treatment is done, then in most of the cases, one can effectively combat the condition.

Here’s What You Need to Know about ADHD

Causes of ADHD
There is no exact cause of ADHD. However, there are a number of factors behind this illness. The most common factors of ADHD are genetic, drinking or smoking during pregnancy, brain injury, and low-class lifestyle. Apart from these factors, smoking, drinking alcohol, and substance abuse play an important role in the onset of this condition.

Symptoms of ADHD
The key symptoms of ADHD include being inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive.

Inattention:

  • A child starts being inattentive in the class and makes silly mistakes when performing tasks or activities.
  • He or she cannot understand the task including the lecture and the conversations happening in the class.
  • The individual cannot connect to the person directly who is talking with him or her.
  • The child cannot manage the work that is being aligned and fails to perform at school.
  • The child starts avoiding homework or any other activity.

Hyperactivity and impulsivity:

  • Children with this syndrome start fidgeting.
  • The individual cannot sit in the classroom properly and leaves the chair frequently without any reason.
  • They tend to talk excessively.
  • They could suddenly become hyperactive.
  • They cannot enjoy their leisure time since they cannot relate what to do.
  • They start interrupting or interfering in discussions or conversations.
  • They do not give anyone a chance to finish the question when asked one. They tend to answer or interrupt before the individual can complete the question.

Treatment options available for ADHD
Unfortunately, there is still no particular medicine or therapy for ADHD. However, there are certain treatments and therapies which are to be followed to improve the condition. Treatments and therapies for managing the symptoms of ADHD include medication, educational training, counseling, or psychotherapy.

Most of the time, it is to be believed that medications cure the disease completely and the children get their ability to lead a normal life and be attentive to their works. However, one cannot just consume any over-the-counter medications; people should take proper medications only if a doctor or specialist prescribes them. There are two types of medicines that are generally prescribed as a treatment procedure for ADHD—stimulants or non-stimulants. The stimulant type of medications allows stimulating the brain chemicals that are responsible for attention and thinking. Non-stimulants, however, take much longer time to start the recovery but it helps to improve attention, focus, and impulsivity. The doctors prescribe non-stimulants when a stimulant is not effective for the patient.

Behavioral therapy is a part of psychotherapy. Through this therapy, the behavior of a child or an adult is focused upon. It helps children to be more attentive towards their studies and activities; for adults, they can go for therapy to be able to handle their daily tasks. The parents, family members, neighbors, teachers, and friends can also share their feedback with proper justification with the affected people so that they can work on their behavior and choose the correct path.

Counseling is another important therapy used to recover from ADHD. With the help of this therapy, the doctor will be able to know the exact reason behind the mental disorder and accordingly start the treatment or medication. Parents play a very important role in this scenario. They need to set the correct goal for their children whenever there is any negative activity made by them. They need to encourage and praise their children more for their positive work and energy. This will make the children enthusiastic to perform the correct activity.
