Foods to eat and avoid for hemophilia patients

Individuals with hemophilia have reduced levels of a blood-clotting substance called factor VIII in the body. Hence, they bleed for a longer time after an injury. Obesity is another problem that adds strain on the muscles and joints; therefore, one must ensure a healthy weight. Although there is no special diet required for hemophilia, it is necessary to nourish the body with the right kind of foods.

Here are three foods to eat and avoid.

Foods to eat

  • Fruits and vegetables

hemophilia patients should fill their plates with fruits and vegetables. Dark and green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, kale, bok choy, and fruits like strawberries, pears, and apples are excellent sources of vitamins, fiber, and minerals.

  • Calcium-rich foods

For bone and teeth health, it is necessary to provide the body with an adequate amount of calcium, especially in adolescents and children. Gum diseases like bleeding gums are extremely common and treatable; however, they can be a major cause of concern among hemophilia patients. Orange juice, lean red meat, poultry, almonds, and beans are rich in calcium and should be included in daily diet.

  • Foods rich in iron

The iron content in the body produces red blood cells that carry oxygen to all the body organs. Excessive bleeding can cause loss of iron, making it necessary to ensure that there is enough iron in the body for a steady recovery. Fortified cereals, raisins, apricots, peas, seafood, liver, and poultry are good sources of iron.

Foods to avoid

  • Fried foods

Oily foods, especially deep-fried meats, chips, and junk foods, are unhealthy and add unnecessary weight to the body. Foods that contain high levels of trans fat and saturated fats like pizza, crackers, butter, and lard should be limited in daily diet.

  • Sugary treats

High sugar items like cookies, pie, soft drinks, energy drinks, candy, and chocolates should be restricted since they are high in saturated fats. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), women and men should not consume more than six teaspoons and nine teaspoons of sugar, respectively.

  • Supplements

Fish oil and vitamin E supplements should not be consumed by hemophilia A patients as they can prevent the clumping of platelets. Herbs like ginger, willow bark, Asian ginseng, large quantities of garlic, Ginkgo Biloba, and feverfew should be avoided as they can worsen bleeding. It is best to consult a doctor before starting any medication.
