Diagnosis and Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

An irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the major and common disorders that damage the large intestine. Some of the signs and symptoms of IBS include abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea, bloating, cramping, constipation, and much more. It is a chronic disease and its treatment is usually done on a long-term basis.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
A very small number of people show signs and symptoms of this disease. Actually, its symptoms are manageable only if you control your diet, lead a good lifestyle, and more importantly, reduce your stress. More severe symptoms can be brought under control through medications and counseling sessions of doctors. Let’s have a look at how you can treat irritable bowel syndrome.

Diagnosis of IBS
There is no definitive diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome. However, your doctor will start the treatment by looking at your medical history, physical exam, and the tests that you have done so that they can rule out other medical conditions. After that, they will use one of the three criteria for IBS diagnosis which are Rome criteria, Manning criteria, and Type of IBS. Also, doctors examine the other signs and symptoms as well so that they become absolutely sure that you do not have any other condition. Some of the signs include:

  • Weight loss
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever
  • Anemia because of low iron

Additional tests
If your doctor is not satisfied, then he or she might ask you to do some more tests which will include stool tests. The imaging tests your doctor might suggest you include:

  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • X-ray or CT scan

Some of the laboratory tests that may be suggested by the doctors are:

  • Lactose intolerance tests
  • A breath test of bacterial overgrowth
  • Upper endoscopy
  • Stool test

Treatment
Eliminating the symptoms is one of the main IBS treatment options. Also, if you have mild symptoms, then changing your lifestyle or food habits or managing stress could be one of the ways to reduce IBS. You should look to:

  • Get enough sleep
  • Eat foods that are high in fiber content
  • Drink plenty of fluids such as fruit juice and water
  • Avoid foods that trigger your symptoms
  • Exercise regularly

In case you are suffering from IBS, worry not as it is a medical issue that can be treated easily. Though it is a chronic disease, with the help of an experienced medical practitioner, you can reduce the symptoms and live a healthy life.
