Dental ailments and their solutions

Tooth pain is caused by nerves inside the tooth and their reactions to different stimuli. There can be several issues that can lead to tooth pain. Tooth pain treatment varies with the symptoms that present itself. Here are a few symptoms with the possible diagnosis and treatment. However, in the case of severe pain, it is best to consult a doctor.

Dental ailments and their solutions

  • Intolerance to food and liquids at different temperatures: If the discomfort persists over a long period of time, it can be due to a cavity, a loose filling, or an open root surface. The solution to this is to use a soft toothbrush. Clean the gum line gently and brush twice a day. You can use fluoride toothpaste for sensitive teeth. You can also massage the gums with the toothpaste by rubbing it into the root surface for about ten minutes. If the sensitivity does not stop, visit your dentist.
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods after a dental procedure: Dental work could cause tooth sensitivity due to swelling in the gums. This might take a few days to heal. Dental procedures like a filling or root canal operation can take a week or two to heal. Mild painkillers like acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen can be taken. If the pain continues, see your dentist.
  • Excruciating pain when eating: A cavity with a bad filling or a chipped tooth can cause excruciating pain. Immediately consult a dentist before the situation worsens. The cavity has to be fixed and the problem needs to be rectified. If the pain is caused by blood vessels and nerve infection, you may require a root canal treatment.
  • Persisting pain after eating: This is caused when blood vessels are infected. They may cause tooth to decay and lead to permanent damage. See your dentist or endodontist, if the pain does not go away. In all likelihood, a root canal treatment might be required.
  • Slight pain in the upper teeth: Stuffy nose due to a cold or flu can cause pain in the upper teeth. This can also occur because of biting or applying any sort of pressure to the area. Consult your dentist to check if it is due to a tooth problem.
  • Severe and persistent pain in the tooth: If the tissue inside a tooth is irreversibly infected or swollen, it can cause severe pain. Consult your dentist or endodontist without delay for a thorough check up. You might be in need of a root canal treatment.
  • Inflammation of the gum: It can be due to several reasons. The primary cause is due to improper brushing. The teeth also can get affected if there is any problem with the gums. Consult your dentist immediately. They may prescribe gels to soothe the inflammation.

It is important to take good care of your teeth and brush regularly. A healthy diet is also essential to have good oral hygiene. Regular dental check-ups can keep you safe from all sorts of dental ailments.
