Common medications for the treatment of sinus

Sinus or sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue present along the lines of the sinuses. Basically, a connected system of hollow cavities inside the skull is called sinus. If you are healthy, these sinuses are filled with air. But in certain cases, they can come to be blocked and filled with fluid.

Common medications for the treatment of sinus
Eventually, germs might grow and cause an infection. Below, we have described the common sinus medications and treatments.

Decongestant
For a simple sinus infection, you might be recommended to use a decongestant and saline nasal washes. This is usually the first sinus medication that is prescribed at the initial stage of sinusitis.

Antibiotics
If simple sinus is not controlled with a decongestant, then antibiotics are given for a particular number of days. In most of the case antibiotics work well. Take care that you complete the course of antibiotics and don’t leave the course midway.

Vaporizing
It is not exactly a sinus medication, but inhaling steam helps a lot of people. You can either buy a vaporizer or do it from a pot of hot water. Take care that the water isn’t too hot.

Steroids
In some cases, a doctor might also prescribe steroids along with the antibiotics. Many inflammations at some point might require the help of steroids. Please make sure that you don’t use the steroids without a doctor’s recommendation and in the recommended doses only.

Antihistamine
Some people have allergies, and a sinus can be aggravated if you already have existing allergies. In this case, there is a possibility that your doctor may recommend an antihistamine medicine as well.

Antifungal
Sometimes a doctor thinks that it is required to give an antifungal medicine because a sinus can deteriorate if there are fungal issues present already. In such cases, antifungal medicines are also prescribed.

Immunoglobulin
If your immune system is weak and you have certain immune deficiencies, there are chances that your doctor would recommend the immunoglobulin medicine too.

Although we have provided this list to give you a brief idea of the types of sinus medications usually prescribed, it is strongly recommended to avoid taking any sinus medication without the recommendation and prescription from a registered physician.
