Bronchitis – Top Remedies and Management Options

The bronchial tube connects the nose and throat to the lungs, and its primary function is to carry air to and from the lungs. Inflammation and swelling in the bronchial tubes result in a condition called bronchitis. People with bronchitis can experience symptoms like severe cough, chest congestion, and shortness of breath.

Bronchitis – Top Remedies and Management Options
However, the condition and its symptoms can be managed by a few at-home remedies and other treatment options.

Home remedies
Certain remedies can help relieve mild symptoms while also supporting other bronchitis treatment options. A few popular at-home remedies are:

Honey
Honey is known for its exceptional antibacterial and antiviral properties, and it can help clear congestion and blockage in the chest. This ingredient can provide relief from inflammation by breaking up the mucus. One can add honey to hot beverages like ginger tea or lemon tea or add it to warm water with black pepper or onions. However, heating honey or mixing it with boiling water can diminish its beneficial properties.

Oregano oil
Oregano oil is one of the most effective home remedies for bronchitis treatment. It can soothe the inflammation in the walls of bronchial tubes. Health experts suggest that adding a few drops of oregano oil to meals can help in relieving chronic bronchitis symptoms. Applying oregano oil on the tongue can also provide relief from symptoms.

Salt water
Salt water is useful in loosening persistent mucus brought on by bronchitis. However, one should not swallow the solution as aspirating salt water can aggravate the symptoms.

Onion
Throat inflammation can be eased by adding raw onions to the patient’s meals. Additionally, having a glass of onion juice every day can aid in symptom management.

Tomato soup
Excessive mucus formation is a common bronchitis symptom. Tomato soup can be an ideal addition to daily meals for reducing mucus. Further, a bowl of hot tomato soup also soothes the body, giving it necessary heat during the winters. One can also have other kinds of healthy soup twice a day for the best results.

Pursed-lip breathing
Pursed-lip breathing can be one of the best treatments for bronchitis and asthma symptoms. It is a breathing technique that facilitates paced breathing and helps control the shortness of breath. The technique focuses on keeping the airways open for a longer time by increasing the gap between two breaths. It enables better airflow to the lungs, helping the person become more active. One can practice this technique by breathing through the nose and holding it for two counts, followed by slowly breathing out through slightly pursed lips.

Mustard oil massage
Gentle massages using mustard oil can help in providing relief for a stiff chest. Mustard oil can provide heat, and so it can ease the congestion caused in the lungs due to chronic bronchitis. The accumulated mucus can also be broken up with the help of a warm massage. However, it is important to make sure that the patient is not allergic to mustard oil to avoid side effects that might aggravate other symptoms.

Increasing water intake
Apart from plenty of rest, bronchitis patients must also ensure that they are adequately hydrated to effectively manage the condition. One should increase their daily water and fluid intake, as this can help in thinning the mucus in the bronchial tubes. This can also make it easier for one to get rid of the mucus while coughing.

Other treatment options
While certain remedies can relieve the symptoms, it is important to seek a doctor’s help and find treatment options for better management. While there is no single best cure for bronchitis, several options can work for recurring and persistent symptoms. Further, some options can help one deal with the urge to cough and also inhibit mucus production. Other popular bronchitis treatments are:

Use a humidifier
It is yet another one of the best treatments for bronchitis. Bronchitis can cause blockages in air passage due to the formation of mucus, making it difficult for the patient to breathe. Humidifiers can loosen mucus, relieve wheezing, and make it easier to breathe. If one does not have a humidifier at home, then a hot shower or even steam inhalation can also help in loosening the mucus.

Pain relievers
Doctors may pain relievers that can be used to provide relief from chronic bronchitis symptoms. These can help with the pain and alleviate discomfort experienced by patients. However, these treatment options should be considered based on doctors’ recommendations.

Along with bronchitis treatment plans, health experts also recommend plenty of rest when dealing with the condition. This is because one can feel exhausted due to breathing issues and may have low energy levels due to insufficient oxygen supply to the body. So, resting and getting adequate sleep can be the best cure for bronchitis as they relieve tiredness and strengthen the immune system to help fight the infection better. Mild symptoms can be treated at home and may go away on their own in a week or two. However, persistent issues should be communicated to the doctor.
