Blood Clots – Know about the Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

When the blood takes the form of a semi-solid, gel-like state, the resultant formation is termed as a blood clot. It is normal for a blood clot to form on a regular basis as it helps to repair the walls of the blood vessels in the case of any damage.

Blood Clots – Know about the Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
The formation of blood clots can create a problem if it clots in larger quantities, forming a barrier to the normal flow of blood throughout the body.

A blood clot can form anywhere, either in the artery or even in the vein. There are a number of risk factors related to the clotting of blood. These include hypertension, higher cholesterol, addiction to smoking, and diabetes to name a few.

Several complications like immobility and disability can also occur due to blood clots; some may be fatal as well. In case the clots break free and travel through the bloodstream, they can risk the functioning of the other organs as well. Blood clots are the main reason why an individual can suffer from heart attacks and strokes.

Causes of blood clots
There are a few prominent causes for the formation of a blood clot. Some of them include the following:

  • Vascular trauma (injury caused to the blood vessels)
  • Disturbances in the normal blood flow
  • Changes in the composition of the blood
  • Ischemic strokes in which the blood clots block the artery, putting a barrier on the normal blood flow to the brain. It occurs due to the clotting of blood in the heart and causes heart rhythm disorders such as atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation.
  • Blood clots are also formed due to atrial fibrillation because some blood remains in the heart chambers as a result of an irregular heartbeat. These clots can then travel to the brain through the blood vessels.
  • Blood clots can be formed because of an injury to the heart as well. Moreover, a person having artificial valves in the heart can also develop a blood clot.
  • Atherosclerosis can cause blood clotting. It is related to the narrowing or hardening of the arteries. The blood flow reduces because the wall of the artery thickens. These arteries often tear the blood flowing through it, thereby forming clots and blocking the whole artery. In this case, the oxygen supply to the heart or brain may shut down.
  • Usage of oral contraceptive pills can also cause blood clots.
  • Clots in the blood may also form due to a trauma or an injury to the vein. A person can suffer from superficial thrombophlebitis in the case of blood clotting in the brain.

Symptoms of blood clots
The main symptom that a blood clot carries is the early signs of heart attacks. It mainly comprises angina and pain in the chest that could precede a heart attack. Blood clots that lead to strokes could lead to an individual experiencing symptoms like blindness and feeling distortions on a single side of the body, such as one side of the face, leg, or arm. Blood clots can also cause the person to suffer from distorted or slurred speech if it occurs on the left side of the brain. Symptoms of blood clots also include a headache, blurred vision, and difficulty in coordination and maintaining balance.

Treatment for blood clots

  • As long as the treatment for blood clots is concerned, blood thinning options and anticoagulants can be some common management options.
  • Walking, mild exercises, and application of moist bags can help reduce mild inflammation after the development of a blood clot.
  • Preventive measures can be taken by avoiding long periods of immobility, like flight rides and drives.
