A guide to allergy medicines

A list of allergy medicines is listed below:

Antihistamines
This is among the most common allergy relief medications prescribed by the doctors. Antihistamines are used for countering the impacts of histamines and controlling the spread of the condition. Depending on the condition of the patient, the drug can be prescribed in the form of eye drops, creams, nasal sprays, liquids or tablets. Whatever be the form, patients may experience drowsiness and should not drive under the effect of these allergy medicines.

Decongestants
Allergies leading to sinus congestion or stuffy nose can be controlled with decongestants. Decongestants help in shrinking the blood vessels and opening up the nasal passage so that one can breathe at ease. Sudafed, Propagest, and Entex are some of the commonly prescribed decongestants for curing allergic symptoms. Though these are safe, patients with high blood pressure or pregnant women should consult doctors before taking these medications.

Epinephrine
Anyone suffering from life-threatening allergic conditions like anaphylaxis is prescribed epinephrine drug to check the spread. These are available in auto-injector form and need to be used as per the doctor’s advice. Anapen, Twinject, and EpiPen are some of the popular brands of epinephrine.

In many cases, over-the-counter medicines can help in treating allergies. Therefore, it will be wise for you to make an allergy medicine list available on pharmacies without any prescription. Cetirizine, fexofenadine, levocetirizine, loratadine, brompheniramine, chlorpheniramine clemastine, and diphenhydramine are among the commonly used allergy medicines. Ketotifen, naphazoline and pheniramine combination ophthalmic are used for eye infections.

Though anti-allergic drugs are used for checking allergic reactions in the body, these too, have some side-effects. While drowsiness is the most common side-effects of the anti-allergic drugs, especially the tablets, some people may also complain of nausea, vomiting, nervousness or dry mouth after consuming these allergy medicines. Though rare, nasal bleeding is also sometimes experienced by patients on anti-allergic medication. Tastelessness and dry mouth too can be experienced as symptoms of this condition.

While most of the side-effects get cured with time, in some cases, patients may have to visit a doctor and get the medicine changed. So, there is nothing to panic about the side-effects.
