6 foods that can be made a part of a gout diet plan

Gout is a painful form of arthritis caused by high levels of uric acid in the bloodstream. The increased acid levels lead to the formation of crystals that accumulate in the joints and thus, a patient may experience severe pain.

6 Foods That Can Be Made A Part Of A Gout Diet Plan
Uric acid is produced by the breakdown of a chemical called purine. Purine is produced through natural functions of one’s body but is also delivered through different foods. Gout is characterized by swelling in the joints and pain that leads to an inability to carry out one’s daily functions.

Individuals who suffer from gout may have heard of the term “gout diet”. The diet holds great significance and patients must follow it regularly. A gout diet does not cure the ailment but can help reduce the levels of uric acid. Importantly, it can lower the risk of suffering from a gout attack and halt the progression of the disease. Here are some types of food that one must add to their gout diet plan:

Water – There is a lot of emphasis on the fact that water is pivotal for good health. One must drink water frequently, and every day a minimum of 2 liters must be consumed. However, in some cases, excess water consumption may be restricted by the doctor as it may worsen the symptoms. So, consult a physician prior to increasing the consumption of water.

Vegetables – Consuming vegetables regularly is a key to maintain good health. Fresh vegetables such as red bell pepper, beetroot, cabbage, and kailan should be added to one’s gout diet plan. These veggies carry great benefits and lower the risk of gout attacks. On the other hand, one must avoid the consumption of some vegetables like cauliflower and spinach as these vegetables are high in purines.

Nut and seeds – Research has shown that nuts such as walnuts, pistachios, pecans and flax seeds have a good effect on gout as they are low in oxalic acid. One should consume small portions of these nuts as a part of their diet.

Fruits – Some fruits alleviate the pain experienced by gout attacks. Fruits with high levels of Vitamin C have a positive effect on reducing gout pain. One must add fruits like tangerines, papaya, cherries, and oranges to their gout diet plan.

Fish – Canned fish like tuna and salmon have high levels of fatty acids but generally contain lower levels of purine and thus are useful for easing the symptoms of gout. The fatty acids in these fishes aid in reducing and soothing the inflammation caused by gout flare-ups. On the other hand, people with gout should avoid seafood like codfish, mackerel, sardines, and trout as they are found to be the worst for gout.

Low-fat dairy – here are some low-fat dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese which are found to help in the excretion of uric acid. Milk contains a substance called orotic acid that plays a key role in decreasing the reabsorption and promoting the removal of uric acid through one’s kidneys. However, one must consult a physician as the same food can have different results for different patients.

It goes with saying that people who suffer from gout must receive treatment and medication to lower the levels of uric acid and bring relief from pain. However, adding the above foods to a gout diet can limit production and increase the elimination of uric acid. One must exercise regularly and limit their calorie intake to maintain this health.
