5 Surprising Things your Car Insurance Won’t Cover

Car insurance is meant to give driver’s peace of mind by covering damage due to storms, vandalism, and accidents. However, regardless of how much you pay for your policy, no insurance will cover you for everything imaginable. Take a boo at these surprising things that your insurance policy won’t pay coverage for…

Customizations

You installed enhancements on your car in order to make people jealous. However, you never thought that would lead to your car getting stolen. Beware if you add customizations to your vehicle (i.e., custom rims, grills, spoilers, wraps, performance upgrades, and even wheelchair lifts) are not part of your coverage.

2. Certain animal attacks

There’s an animal sanctuary near my home town, and one of the main attractions is a “monkey drive,” which is a part of the park where you can drive your car through to see the monkeys in action. Unfortunately, many of the monkeys will rip off car antennas, windshield wipers, spoilers, and weather stripping. If you voluntarily take your car through a zoo such as this, and your car is damaged due to an attack, the damage to your car likely won’t be covered.

3. Your remaining car loan

Now you might wonder why your insurance would ever cover the remainder of your car loan…until you get into a collision and your car is completely totalled. If you finance a car, the loan payments are your responsibility, even if you can’t drive the car. You might only get a payout from insurance for the car’s market value, and you’d be responsible for the rest.

4. Personal business usage

If you opt to make some money on the side using your car to taxi folks around (i.e., Uber) or for delivery purposes (i.e., take out) be sure to check your insurance policy first. It may include exclusions under the standard personal policy about using your car for business. That means if you get into an accident on your delivery route, the damage won’t be covered.

5. Personal items

Before you leave that $2,000 laptop in your car, think again! Although your auto insurance covers your car as far as theft or vandalized (if you have basic theft coverage), it will not protect the personal items you stow away inside your car. So if you go on a shopping spree, don’t leave your items in plain sight. Tuck them away in the trunk away from prying eyes. Keep in mind, if you have house insurance, you may be able to file a police report and get the cost of the items replaced.
